Katrina Stephens’ fascination in the unique and ancient art of Chinese Brush Painting began 15 years ago.
The nature of the brushes and the way the paper, paints and ink worked together was totally different to western art, which she found intriguing and challenging.
Whether translating the work of old masters into more contemporary style, or adapting subjects from nature, the end result is about the painter capturing of the spirit or ‘chi’ of the object, so is always unique to the eye of the beholder. Applying this gentle and peaceful art demands freshness and spontaneity, as well as a real feeling for the essence of the subjects chosen from nature, resulting in an ‘expression’, and not a copy of life.
“It is not just a way of painting, but also a monitor on your state of inner calm and alignment. If that balance is not there, the ‘flow’ does not flow!”
There are two distinct styles to be found in her work: the calm fluidity of the floral works and landscapes; and the contrasting energy and movement of her bird pictures.
Much of her inspiration comes from old, often nameless Chinese masters. Practice and improvement in this Oriental technique is derived from copying and creating work ‘in the style of’ an old master. With no opportunity to ask how they created certain effects, Katrina has improvised, creating a more contemporary effect.
Katrina is an active member of the Chinese Brush Painting Society.
